It all depends on where you live. California, For example, has Many mixed departments where the volunteers work side by side with paid staff, though the paid staff are in charge. At my department all engines are staffed by three paid and often a volunteer rides fourth man, or if we have enough volunteers on shift they can staff both the fourth seat and the Squad truck. The best way to find out if a station near you has a VFC (Volunteer Fire company) is to go down and ask.
