For many years New York has had the most strict regulations on having a master's degree to teach, but teachers are given 3-5 years and can apply for an extension as long as they are working towards the degree. (The years vary depending on when you received your undergraduate degree and certification) Regardless of what state you teach in, a master's degree will enhance your teaching skills and knowledge beyond your subject area. I'm so glad I waited to get my degree until I started teaching. I got so much more out of the experience and when I finished my degree, I didn't have to struggle to find a job.
