Tips for commuting by train?

Commuting from York to Leeds - train or car?

  • Hi, I am about to start working in Leeds, commuting from my home in York and back every weekday, planning to start at about 8am and finish 4-4.30pm. I will be taking the train, ...show more

  • Answer:

Train. It's around a 30 minute journey and the fare is £8.10 (if not, it's £10.80) if you have a Young Person's Railcard (I say that because you mention about passing your driving test, so I am presuming you fall in that age bracket). Petrol is currently around £1.35 - £1.40 a litre (at least it is where my parents live in Bucks; it might be a little cheaper in Yorkshire). Coincidentally, my mum's brother does the exact same commute - but in reverse; he lives in Horsforth and commutes to York. He doesn't do it every day because, 2 or 3 days a week he works from home, so he does drive it. Train is going to be cheaper - no contest. If petrol your way is £1.35/litre, then you do the sums. You could, probably, buy a season ticket and save more that way. And, if your company's paying, they'll thank you.

Train. Easier, quicker and cheaper. Get a season ticket. Cars are too much of a headache, esp. in a city like Leeds. Let the train take the strain.
