Why have I had sudden heart rate increase?

Why would opiates (hydrocodone, codeine) increase my heart rate?

    I took 420mg of prescription codeine phsophate tablets a while ago and I had the same experience in terms of heart rate, it soared to 138bpm when my normal average heart rate should be 80bpm lol

Yeah the first poster is right opiates tend shorten breathe due to a decrease in lung capacity from your diaphragm being suppressed. This is why it must be monitored closely when people with Sickle Cell Disease take opiates. Their O2 concentrations are already low. However, the second poster could be right as well depending on what you have.

Just guessing here but: Opiates also depress respiration. How's your vital capacity? Heart rate responds to CO2 concentration in the blood. If your C02 rises, so will your pulse rate.
