Why are animals important in biomedical research?

Should the animals be used for scientific research? is it humanly? why?

    Your question has no simple answer, and the fact is that hundreds of books and reports have been published on the subject without humanity reaching a general consensus. My own opinion is that animals should only ever be used in medical research (ie, not for cosmetics etc) and only certain animals at that. The great apes and monkeys (being intelligent and sentient to some extent) should never be used, and where possible the work should be limited to small rodents, fruit flies and other invertebrates. The work should be done as humanely as possible, and research should be ongoing to find ways to make experimentation as less stressful as possible on the animal. They should be treated as well as possible, and euthanized if they do begin to suffer unnecessarily. There's no easy answer unfortunately.

Next time you fall ill, you should think about all the scientific advances that have been made in the 20th Century, made possible at least in part with animal experimentation. No longer does medicine perform such barbaric procedures as lobotomies or bloodletting, due to a better understanding of human biology. Think of the type of medical treatment you may receive had these scientific advances not been made. And think about all of the human lives that have been saved because of these scientific advances. Yes, the use of animals in scientific research is controversial but it is indispensable. There simply is no substitute for it, unfortunately.
