What's student life at Boston University like?

Whats it like to be a student at Hawaii Pacific University?

  • I see no future where i live now. I've always dreamed of living by the ocean, especially in Hawaii. Always wanted to surf, study marine life and be happy simply. Has anyone ever ...show more

  • Answer:

I'm from Hawaii, but I went to the University of Hawaii, not HPU. I think UH is alot cheaper because it's a public school. If you want to surf, then yeah, it's a great place to go to school. Both schools are only a few miles from the ocean. As a Native American, it's not something that would help or hurt you. We just don't get many Native American's here. We have Native Hawaiians and other Polynesians though. Honolulu is a very multi-ethnic city, so pretty much any race can fit it in some way or another. Hawaii is a very expensive place to live, so you have to be realistic about that.

HPU is an awesome university with a diverse student body. They have students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries, so yes, you would fit right in being Native American. In regards to other's comments about UH being cheaper, that would not be the case with you, as I assume you are from out-of-state (not from Hawaii). Therefore, HPU would actually be cheaper. HPU's out-of-state tuition is much lower than UH. Also, if you're concerned about funding, financial aid and scholarships are available at HPU, which can cover majority of your tuition. Not to mention, the quality of a private education at HPU (versus public at UH) is much more valuable once you hit the job market. In addition, HPU has the best Marine Biology programs in the state of Hawaii. In your first year, you'd be able to experience hands-on research aboard their 50 foot research vessel, the Kaholo. You'll also learn from world-renown scientists and scholars at the Oceanic Institute, an aquaculture research facility at Makapu'u Point that offers students hands-on research and internship opportunities. I actually attended HPU and what I really liked about this university is that they provide personal attention and guidance. From the small classes to helpful faculty and staff, there was always someone available to answer my questions and point me in the right direction. Also, the students here are all very friendly and they have a lot of events to get involved outside of the classroom. If you're interested in what other HPU students have to say, check out their Facebook page or student blogs (links below). You can easily connect with students that have the same interests as you and make friends even before you reach campus. One last thing, if you're worried about the commute between your home-town and HPU, HPU provides its students with airline discounts :))).Good luck and safe travels!

I'm sure LOTS of people have gone [not went] there. You may find some to answer your question if you put this over in the "Higher Education" section, rather than the "Travel" section. There aren't all that many colleges IN Hawaii, so your choices will be limited. Living in Hawaii is expensive and it's expensive to get back and forth from home to school. Plus, you never know whether YOU might be one of those people who gets "rock fever" from the isolation.
