Homemade go-kart laws?

What are the US laws concerning homemade flying drones?

  • I've seen the videos online of people's homemade quadcopters and such. What are the laws concerning building something that can fly over a fair distance?

  • Answer:

In the United States, laws require the FAA to make regulations. For decades, the FAA just sort of ignored this for UAVs. The only real use of UAVs was hobbyists flying RC planes and helicopters until recently. Because of the growing desire for commercial use (which was technically not allowed at all), Congress had to create a law forcing the FAA to create complete regulations by 2015. The current regulations are still being determined, but there are provisional ones. They require the acquisition of an "experimental" license to use commercially and these are no longer available. They all went to builders and designers, not operators. The rules for hobbyists require that the operator maintain line-of-sight at all times. That the aircraft not be flown over crowds of people. Keep your distance from airports. Fly below 400 feet. Daytime flights. http://www.faa.gov/news/fact_sheets/news_story.cfm?newsId=14153

In addition to the FAA flight regulations, as Todd mentioned, the FCC controls what wavelengths you can transmit on for a given purpose.
