find out where they are issued in your state (for louisiana it's new orleans that's all i know!), then head there and pick it up. It usually doesn't take more than 3-5 hours, at least in new orleans

You live there - why don't you call them and find out what you need, how long it really takes, and what it costs? Gather up whatever documents they tell you that you must have, get some photos taken and take it all with you to that big office you mentioned?
