How many train stations are there in Sheffield?

Indian Railways: Do people sometimes pull the alarm chain to stop the train at their preferred stations in a big city when the train is not officially scheduled to stop?

  • I've noticed that: Whenever a train from Mumbai side or from Ratlam (via Vadodara) side enters Ahmedabad from south, the train sometimes stops at stations like Barejadi, Vatva, Maninagar or if from Delhi side then at Sabarmati before finally stopping at Ahmedabad Central (Kalupur) DESPITE these stations not being the official stops in the schedule of that particular train. My co-passengers told me that people often pull the chains to get down to the stations closer to their homes.

  • Answer:

Yes, they do. They do it mostly in suburbs or on the peripherals of a metropolis but this practice is also present in rural and semi-urban pockets, despite this act being illegal for the purpose they are employing it. It is convenient for some passengers to pull alarm chain and halt the train at their preferred location or else they'll have to walk to their places (or hire costly autos or taxis), which are often distant from the designated stop and mostly not served by any meaningful transport system, and more so during late evenings.
