Medical college in the USA?

Why are attorney and doctor fees so high in USA if anybody can open a law or medical college?

  • I mean there are many colleges for learning law and medicine. And more seats (or colleges) could be added without much govt. interference. So why is a legal or medical consultancy costs so high for such a long time now?

  • Answer:

The gatekeepers in the United States are not the government, but rather the professional societies (i.e. the American Bar Association and the American Medical Association).  In some ways that that causes even more of a shortage, because doctors and lawyers have a professional interest in keep fees high, whereas if the system was government mandated there would be some political pressure to lower fees.

I disagree with Mr Wang . The question itself contains assumptions which are not accurate. Each state set it own rules for  who may become licensed as an attorney. As a matter of ensuring that the education meets certain standards, most states follow the ABA certification process. However some places, notably California allow unaccredited law schools to operate. The sate sets a different level of examinations for student of unaccredited schools. General press reports say that 90% of the people who attend unaccredited law schools in California fail to pass the state  examination. The ABA does not act as a gatekeeper. It is not a licensing board. In medical school, government regulation limits the number of students to ensure the quality of the clinical teaching experience. There is a vast difference between learning Medici in a 600 person lecture hall and working with cadavers or live patients. Opening a medical school is not something anybody with a lab table and a Bunsen burner can do. There are individual state certifications of the schools and there are state administered examinations and licensing. I am less familiar with eh role the AMA plays but I can tell you with absolute certainty that a person cannot practice medicine in any state in the US without a state license. It is not mandatory for a professional to belong to either society. .A number of doctors dropped their membership from the AMA for political reasons surrounding the abortion question.
