Answer:
I too have these calls. I have no idea how they got my number, but I have, it seems successfully stopped them. I bought an umpire's whistle and while engaging them in conversation, took a deep breathe and gave them a blast with the whistle. Only had to do it twice, the last time may weeks ago. Haven't had a call since Hey... TDers! Is it smoko? you've missed a few.

I am supplying them with all the details of users on this site. I have the means to obtain these details by way of a glitch in the profile page. It is a very good means of increasing my finances. I'm up to a lot of tricks like this; that is why the call me The Shadow. I know you believe all that........but seriously, your details have been obtained by means of some on-line purchase you have made at some time. It happens to many. Edit: I received a text message, a short time ago, to say I had won two & a half million pounds in a lottery...& to ring back on a particular number.......duh......delete!

My mother who is in her 80's gets at least 10 of these calls a week. So do her friends. They also get those odd calls that are silent and then say 'Good night' in a sing song voice. These are computer generated random dialing and if there is no operator free when you answer they hang up. It scared them at 10 pm to get such calls. I believe that there is some sort of pensioner list. I have caller ID so I don't pick up calls that say overseas. However we don't get nearly as many as she does. The no call list doesn't block international calls. If they use your name as Mrs "X" they don't know who you are, if they say "Sheila X" some how they have identified you. Maybe through the electoral roll?

This all comes about by outsourcing jobs to India. Those people just can't be trusted. When I get similar calls, the moment I hear the accent I hang up.Of course it doesn't help that my doctor is Indian, but I think I recognize her voice now so no more embarrassment, lol.I find that after umpteen such calls they are tapering off & I rarely get any nowadays.

Ive been using the do not call register since it started and been very happy presumably you are aware it needs to be renewed every 3 yrs or so naturally something odd as you suggest could be happening your only recourse might be to take the details or the australian organisation they are calling on behalf of and make a complaint via the don not call register website .. they have that facility Im sure if on the other hand they are calling for an international organisation or are scammers ... recourse for you is unlikely certainly Telstra will never admit to a breach of their security - they are a seriously backward organisation

I use a different surname on eBay that I use nowhere else. Despite that, I started getting spam letters and calls of people who knew of the surname I only use on eBay. When I called them and asked how they obtained my details, they said I must have signed up through a shopping centre or something, even though I only use that surname on eBay. There's obviously some stupid sellers on eBay that forward our details to telemarkers.
I have always been suspicious of how secure personal information is when outsourcing ( in and outside of Australia) having once worked with a company specialising in outsourcing, all it takes sometimes is a few dollars or rupees to change hands. I am on the do not call register , the occasional call I get the details of the company they are calling on behalf of, then inform them that they are being reported to the telecoms authority and an up. The Australian authorities can't fine the telemarketers but they can fine the companies behind it.

We are on the 'No call register' too, but still get calls regularly. Telstra tells me the calls are made on Skype and until the Federal Government legislates they cant be stopped. Nothing annoys me more than to hear an Indian voice on the end of the line after a short delay.

have you tried the Ombudsman ? they are very helpful. The odd call squeezes through the DNCR ,I tell them I'm busy to please give me their number to call back later ,they NEVER give a number ,some even ask for my details so I'm on their books and then I'm entitled to their number lol .Now I wait till I know who they are, then hang up.
