Answer:
You will probably get a job offer before you leave university. Especially if your PHD is research based for a specific company or funded by a company. Your main problem probably wont be being over qualified it would probably be lack of work. If this becomes your issue it isn't really a major problem Australia is only a few hours away with plenty of work for someone like yourself (you'll have your student loan paid back in no time)

Hi, I would be rather surprised if you didn't get a job with a PhD in chem. eng, especially one from UC. Chemical engineers are on our skill shortage list here, so it is easily open to overseas applicants, and there are not enough people to keep up with the numbers of vacancies. This, however, also would depend on the specific type of chemical engineering you do. I have a friend who did a B.Eng (Hons) in chemical and process engineering and didn't really have any difficulties finding a job. Look on websites such as seek.co.nz and trademe.co.nz to see what's around. (Compare with seek.co.au for Australian jobs / salaries in the same area) I will be honest with you, though, I think many people who got either a Masters or PhD in that field would have probably left NZ to find work overseas. Particularly in Australia and the UK, which you too may decide to do. NZ at the moment has a rather large exodus to other countries because graduates know 1. there are more job opportunities overseas and 2. more importantly, they will be offered more money there than here. Hope that helps :)
