Is oxford a good place to live in?

    Oxford is not a small place - it has a population of 165,000 - so it is not like living in the countryside. However it has some nice countryside nearby - the beautiful Cotswolds. It is also easy to and from with good motorway, train and coach links to London, about an hour away. Although it has a small city centre, dominated by the University and with some outstanding architecture, the larger city is quite varied with some swanky suburbs, working-class council estates, industrial areas, business parks, retail parks etc. I quite like it. I lived nearby as a kid and have relatives there. Lots of films and TV programs have been filmed in Oxford, and there are tons of books that feature the city and the University in particular. The best known bands from Oxford are probably Radiohead and Supergrass.

Oxford is a good place to live in, if you are a college student. The town attracts a lot of tourists, and consists largely of young people. You can find lots of street vendors, small bakeries, mom and pop shops, as well as the big name department stores and grocery shops along the main roads. There are plays going on almost every week as well as a movie theater. Even at night Oxford is very safe, though it starts growing quiet at 9 or 10 pm, and the night life isn't great. If you like pubs, however, there is a good pub crawl in Oxford which usually opens till midnight or later. Lots of bookstores, cafes, street music, museums. If you're a student, the place is a fantastic place to hear guest lecturers, eat fancy school dinners, and enjoy elitest snobbery of the sort. Overall Oxford is a quiet place to live, and not as exciting as London of Paris. It is a good place to study and be a student, as well as enjoy day-to-day activities like punting, performances, and good food.
