How to work on a cruise ship?

  • hi i am a childcare student looking for a job mostly on a cruise ship as it is my dream......because im all new at this i have no idea what i am sposed to do... ive emailed a cruise ...show more

  • Answer:

    1. Decide what you can do. Cruise ships will NOT hire people without experience in the position you are applying for. If you've never worked at a hotel front desk, don't apply to be a purser. If you've never sung, danced, been in theater, acted, don't apply for Cruise Staff. Apply for something you have experience in. If you've never been on a cruise before, don't apply to be the Captain. Cruise lines generally hire entry level positions only and promote from within. 2. Unless you know the name of someone specific at the Corporate Office who oversees the department you want to work in, or have previous cruise ship experience, or have an outstanding resume. Don't send your resume to the Corporate Office of the cruise line. It will get tossed out. 3. Be ready to spend money. Cruise ships require all employees to go through Pre-Employment physicals. Since these are pre-employment things, they are often times not covered by your current medical insurance. Some do, some don't, just depends. Usually it's an out of pocket expense and ranges anywhere from $750-$1300. And it is required before you can start working. It's something that you need to do every 2 years. Most cruise lines also require that new crew members pay for their initial airline ticket to join the ship. Not too bad if you are assigned a ship sailing from a U.S. port, but it can be more expensive if they assign you a ship that is currently sailing in Europe or Asia. Sometimes they will offer to pay for it, you have to fly to another country to meet the ship, but you usually have to reimburse them within the first month. 3. Once you understand all this and are okay with it, the next step is to find yourself a recruiter. Some of the larger recruiters for the U.S. are: Cast-A-Way Cruise and Resort Hiring (Worldwide) Just Cruis'n Recruitment (US and Canada) C-Deck (US) You can Google search or whatever to find contact info. There are others too, and they will usually come up on a search. "hiring partner" +cruise +ship -yahoo From there the recruiter will contact you, if after looking over your application/resume they feel you have potential, and will schedule an interview with you. Another really good way to do it, is to go on a cruise and talk to the people in the department you are interested in. Find out who their recruiter was or how they got hired. People who work in the department you are interested in are really an invaluable source.

i have a friend that doesn't work on a cruise ship. however she works for as a translator for a hearing impaired geared company and they send her on cruises as translators for customers that request their services. that may not directly answer your question, but at least it's another angle.

If the cruise line itself is telling you that you're required to take a course to work on their ship I would assume that it IS required. They wouldn't tell you to otherwise. It may just be that particular cruise line - try emailing a few others to see what they say.
