  • I'm 18 and I thought about working on a cruise ship. What are the qualifications to work on a cruise ship? I have no job experience and I am an official U.S. Marine but I ...show more

  • Answer:

All of the major cruise lines have "jobs" or "careers" information right on their web sites. That is where you must go to apply and not have to pay any fees. You will see that all of the cruise lines use "hiring partners" to recruit and screen for their jobs. Their hiring partners are located all over the world and are the only approved agents and agencies for jobs on their jobs. IMPORTANT: the web sites all have a warning for you to use ONLY the hiring partners that they have listed. You are going to need at least two years experience in the job area that you apply for, like bartending, or housekeeping, and you'll need to be at least 21 years old. Cruise ships don't hire temporary people and you'll need to sign a contract to work an initial period of six to eight months, then you get a couple months off. The requirements to apply will be specified on the cruise line web sites. ROYAL CARIBBEAN: Here's how to apply for a job on a Royal Caribbean ship: http://www.royalcareersatsea.com/ No fees required. Click on "Hiring Partners" and be sure to read all of the information about cruise line job scams. NORWEGIAN: Here's how to apply for positions of Norwegian cruise line ships: http://www2.ncl.com/about/careers/shipbo%E2%80%A6 Click on the link on the page "How to Apply" and it will show you their "hiring partners". PRINCESS: Here's how to apply for positions on Princess cruise ships: http://www.princess.com/employment/onboa%E2%80%A6 Notice that the web site mentions employment scams and directs you to apply only to the agencies it has listed on it's web site. HOLLAND AMERICA: Here's how to apply for positions of Holland America cruise line ships: http://www.hollandamerica.com/about-best%E2%80%A6 CARNIVAL: Here's how to apply for positions on Carnival cruise ships: http://www.carnival.com/cms/fun/fun_jobs%E2%80%A6 Be sure to read the notice on that page about job scams. You have to be 21 and have 2 years experience. You should also know that cruise ships almost never hire Americans unless it is for an entertainment position or a ships officer. These are international ships that operate in international waters and so they hire people from all over the world and they do not have to follow US labor laws. They go to poor countries and can hire the very best and hardest working employees for less than what most Americans would accept.

Learn marine diesel mechanics while you are in the service. The engine room personnel make decent money. Even if you don't score a job on a cruise ship marine diesel mechanics make good money. You have to have experience in whatever job you apply for.

You have received one detailed answer so I will not attempt to repeat everything that stated. But the basic rules are: 2 years experience in the job you are interested in. I suggest you go to the various cruise line websites and take a look at what type of positions they are looking to fill. Then you can look into getting the necessary training. The answer suggesting training in ship mechanics is a good idea as any skilled trades have a higher pay grade and better chances for advancement. Minimum age of 21 Apply only through links on legitimate cruise line websites. There are many companies out there that offer to "train and find you employment in the cruise industry" however in reality the cruise lines either hire their own staff or use hiring agents. These are all indicated on the cruise line website. And although people keep stating they will not hire Americans the truth is that cruise lines will, the reason there are few on board is that most are not willing to work the hours required for the pay they received. A lady in my office used to work on cruise ships and she made about $3.64 an hour when all the time on duty was factored in. She eventually was promoted to an officer position which meant reduced hours and increased pay.
