What do you do when you get off the cruise ship?!?

  • I am going on a carnival caribbean cruise. When I get off the ship, can I find a car rental or else taxi that can take me to a good beach? How does this work? I want to find beautiful ...show more

  • Answer:

When you get to each cruise port you can get off and back on the ship as much as you want. You have two options for activities when you get off the ship. You can book tours through the cruise line. Or, you can get off the ship and browse around and find your own tours, rent a car, or get a taxi. Most places in the Caribbean you can get tours right on the pier that are much cheaper than those offered on the ship. BUT, you must plan to be back on the ship on time. They will tell you over the PA system what time to be back and also hand out shopping flier which will have the departure time on it. So don't be late because the ship will leave you if you go off on your own and don't get back in time. If you had listed your itinerary port stops we could give you some beach names. But you can ask on the ship which beaches are best, or google search each port stop for beaches. A couple suggestions for you: Grand Cayman ... go to 7-Mile Beach, its a short $4.00 each way taxi ride (jet ski rentals and para-sailing right there). ST Thomas ... go to Megan Bay or Sapphire Beach, both are about $8.00 to $10. taxi ride each way St Maarten .. go to Orient Beach. You can get a taxi at the pier Jamaica .. go to Dunns River Falls or do the river float trip Cozumel & Costa Maya .. take a taxi to the beach parks.

Other answers

If you want a rental car I would reserve one in advance. There are always taxis around the port but you have to be careful or they will overcharge you. Very unlikely that you will find anyplace in Caribbean to surf. Kite surfing or windsurfing you can find easily. But to do that you have to go to the popular beach areas to do that. In places like st thomas and st Martin, you can do alot of duty free shopping. St Martin has alot of beaches but if you want to do the alt surfing you need to go up to the best beach area in all Caribbean, Orient bay. Will be lots of people there if you want to do things like jetski you can stay close to port at great bay.
