How long was the Titanic compared to modern day cruise liners?

  • was it average to todays cruisers or shorter?

  • Answer:

The Titanic was 882.75 feet long and 92.5 feet wide. It was 46,000 GRT. http://www.titanic-titanic.com/titanic_statistics.shtml The above numbers would mean the Titanic could fit through the Panama Canal. Until 1996 all cruise ships could fit through the Panama Canal. Most of today's cruise ships that can just fit through the Panama Canal are around 90,000 GRT. In 1996 the Carnival Destiny began sailing. At 101,000 GRT if was the first ship to exceed 100,000 GRT and was too big to fit through the Panama Canal (it is too wide). The Carnival Destiny is 893 feet long and 116 feet wide. In 1998 the Grand Princess began sailing. At 109,000 GRT it was then the largest cruise ship. It is 951 feet long and 118 feet wide. The QE2 was built in 1969. It is 963 feet long and 105 feet wide (and can fit through the Panama Canal). It is 70,000 GRT. Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas was built in 1998. It is 925 feet long and 106 feet wide. It is about 75,000 GRT and can fit through the Panama Canal. In 2004 the QM2 start sailing. At 150,000 GRT it was then the largest cruise ship and is still the largest ocean liner. It is 1132 feet long and 135 feet wide. http://www.titanic-titanic.com/compare_modern_ships_to_titanic.shtml Other large ships: In 2006 the Freedom of the Seas started sailing. At 160,000 GRT it is the largest cruise ship. It is 1112 feet long and 126.5 feet long. In 2009 Royal Caribbean will launch its Genesis project. At 220,000 GRT it will be the largest cruise ship. It will be 1180 feet long.

It depends, cruise ships come in a lot of sizes. See the comparision at the bottom of the page linked below.

It was really small compared to today's ships. Today's ships are about 2 football lengths long and have about 14 or more stories. Cruise ships today have casino's,shops where you can by everything from clothes to jewelery, gyms, jogging area's, many swimming pools, and even ice rinks, just to name a few things.
