  • Answer:

Well, the stories may be depressing, but tourist dollars help their economies. I've been on many Caribbean cruises and have rarely heard "sad stories" about the poor people there. Usually, the people you are likely to come in contact with are friendly and helpful and quite aware that their demeanor will affect the tourism dollars. Jamaica is one exception. There are cruises all over the world. But, from the US, none of them are going to be "cheap". Unless you get a deal on a Canada/New England trip, or one to Bermuda or Alaska [on shoulder season, perhaps].

Third world countries is usually used to describe developing countries without ties to capitalism. That's not the Caribbean. According to most lists, Haiti is the only country in the Caribbean that qualifies as one of the least developed countries. The very widest definition however does include just about the entire world that isn't the US and Western Europe. Even using that definition though you can cruise the New England cruises, Hawaiian cruises and Alaskan in the US. Western Europe and Baltic in Europe. However I would hardly put Acapulco and Puerto Vallerta as underdeveloped. The Caribbean has Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, BWI, and the Bahamas. None of which would be poor. I'm not sure your definition of inexpensive cruises. All ports have port fees. When a country wants tourism, it has low port fees per passenger. Many other ports have high port fees making the cruise more expensive. How expensive a cruise should also include your cost to get there. For me, flying to Italy would be far more expensive. Of course cruises from there go to Turkey and Egypt.
