I can not insist on my useless research, but I must get the research published, or I can't get the degree. What should I do?

I am a CS master student in China. My teacher doesn't give my group members any research projects. Everyday we just read papers and think about ideas by our own, and then report to him at the weekly meeting. When the ideas are ascertained, we write papers. We are not a research group, we are just a paper writing group. We act not like scientists or engineers, we are just trained to be writers. I extremely hate this kind of life. Our research is useless. Our research lies. To accelerate the publication, our papers are wrote in the same pattern. We just use math model to complicate the problem, solve it by unnecessarily complex algorithm and prove it by simulation. Finally, we write a story for the paper. We use theoretic method to solve the artificial and imaginary problem, but we tell people this is a real problem in real system in our story. I have experienced two years such kind of life, and I didn't publish any paper. I was very disappointed by my master life. I don't learn any useful knowledge and skills in these two years. All I learn is how to lie, how to get a paper published within the shortest time, how to hide the defect, how to make naive problem look like scientific. I come here not to ask questions, I know the answer to my question, I have no choice, I can't drop our, so I should learn to lie harder and get my paper published. But I still want to get others' opinion about this situation.

Answer:
So what you are essentially saying is that you have a real world problem that you would like to fix. Well, I suggest that you use a computer to fix it. Make a program that will generate stochastic scientificly looking reports with diagrams and everything and a lot of fancy words, and use this program to make the reports you have to turn in. That way you will have lots of time to spend on interesting research on your own. To give you an idea of what I mean, look at this page: http://www.itu.dk/people/sestoft/center.html where a danish professor of CS has made a report generator for generating reports about virtual centers and stuff. The page is in danish and so are the reports generated, but Google Translate may help you. This particular report generator is open source, so looking at its source code might get you started on your own generator. I suggest that your own generator also quotes from articles, just to give the appearance of a well researched work. I hope it helps :)

I fully sympathize with you. I am a recent graduate from a not-so-good place, and I felt so strongly against the 'paper-writing' activities everyone around me was doing, I stayed away from all such groups, and tried to do something significant on my own. Unfortunately, I ended up with no publication at all, which I now realize has put me at a disadvantage when it comes to applying for grad school. (Although one paper is still in review at a top journal, so there's still hope.) At the moment, you are just a Masters student. You are still in the stage where you are supposed to "pay your dues"[1] to the way research at your institute is carried out. As you make your way up, if you choose to stay in academia, you can end up as a professor in charge of a lab or something. Then you can put your own vision into action, and encourage work in "useful" research directions. Right now, you have to prove your research potential, which is (for good or for bad) gauged by your ability to publish. [1] I recommend reading Philip Guo's excellent booklet "The PhD Grind". (google it, it's available as a pdf from his site.)
