    This is called an ear squeeze. It's very common whenever the pressure around you changes. The best way to deal with it is to pinch your nose, close your mouth, and act like you're exhaling (but you can't, because the air has no way to escape from your mouth/nose). Do this *gently*. You'll feel your ears pop. If you're a guy, you can also try to bounce your adam's apple up and down (kind of like you're saying "ya-ya-ya"). Ear squeezes happen any time the pressure around you changes by a lot, so in addition to air travel, they are very common in scuba diving. There are other techniques to alleviate them - for more information call or stop by your local scuba shop and they'll be happy to tell you more techniques.

you could try taking sudefed(spelling?)it a drug that will clear up your sinuses you can also try sinus rinses that you spray in your nose. I would also recommend taking a Tylenol or some sort of a pain medication.

I know! It happens to me to. But sadly, you just have to deal with it. It's because your so high in the air and your in a small airplane. If you were flying international, you have a large airplane and your ears don't hurt.

If gum doesn't work try drinking water, because the swallowing motions are supposed to help with the ear popping feelings you have due to air pressure. Also the heavy duty head phones people used to block noise could help :-)
