How can I work on a cruise ship?

  • This is for future reference, but I want to know the following things: -How to apply for a job on the ship -How old you have to be (I'm guessing 18) -How long you are expected to ...show more

  • Answer:

You have to e 21 years od with at least 2 years experience in whatever you intend to do from housekeeping, bartending, to assistant cruise director.. You will work about 12 or more hours a day with about 1 day off a month. Sometimes in that month you might get a few more hours off to go ashore. Your pay is minimal and you basically work for tips. Most people that work on a cruise ship are from third world countries such as Mexico, or Poland,

1: through the cruise line directly 2: 21 with a minimum of 2 years experience in the job( professional.. in high end locales so we are talking 5 star hotels and restaurants) 3: contracts are for 6-8 months straight working 7 days a week followed by about 6 weeks off 4: 12-14 hours are typical for most crew positions( housekeeping bar tender, servers, etc) 5: anything a hotel has, a ship has. there are also positions in kids clubs that require an early childhood education as well as entertainment that requires experience in things like social/activities director for a nursing home.

1) apply directly to the cruise lines, they will advertise via their websites. There are plenty from which to choose: Cunard, Royal Caribbean, ........ there really are heaps and heaps just a matter of searching and researching. Don't pay anyone because you can get there on your own bat or through an agency who does not charge. Also don't rule out the river cruise lines through central Europe eg Viking. 2) Crew are usually older than 18 yrs old more like 21/22. 3) You are expected to be onboard for the length of your contract whether 4 months upto 8 months working every day. (Depends on cruise line and the job). I used to work 5 months on and 2 months off in purser office. Easier life (in relevant order) if you are eg dancer/performer or work in casino, onboard shop, pursers office but heavy going if work inbar, restaurant, housekeeping, galley. Also there's jobs like Dr and nurse. 4) Skills required for job are listed in job advert. Ship split into 4 departments: Deck (mariners), Engineering, Hotel (galley, restaurant, bar, housekeeping, pursers office), Entertainment. Mentally & physically you have to be strong and have to have a medical every year. You can meet some really nice crew onboard but there are others who would hang their own mother for $100. Good luck.
