Of course once Germany had signed its August 1939 non-aggressjon pact with Stalin, they suddenly decided that both were equally dangerous, and their agreement to support Poland against Germany (given under the crazy idea that just the threat of support would have deterred Hitler) meant that they were obliged to declare war on Germany alone. However Stalin's war with Finland made extending the war to the USSR something that was only narrowly averted--the Allies recognised in time that they lacked the military might to take on both Germany and Russia..

The Munich Conference was about the future of Czechoslovakia with which both France and Britain had a treaty but the USSR had no such connection. The outcome was the annexation of the Sudetenland by Hitler and this was followed by him grabbing the rest of Czechoslovakia. By then Britain realised what a danger Germany was and in the summer of 1939 the British government tried to get Stalin to agree a pact against Germany At the same time the Germans were trying to get Stalin to agree a pact with them. The Germans beat Britain to it with a non aggression treaty which allowed Stalin to invade Poland from the east to take back territory that the USSR had lost in the aftermath of WW!. This treaty was signed only one week before the start of the war on 1st September 1939. France and Britain declared war on Germany two days later and were the only countries to do so
