Australian rules football first appeared by 1851 in Victoria and soon after in South Australia. Teams began soon after. Now it is the most watched sport in Australia. It is the best football game in the world by far and i have been to all types except grid iron. In the national competition there ar 16 teams to be 17 in 2011 and 18 teams in 2012. There will be by then two teams in every state except TAsmania and 10 in Victoria. There are 22 minor rounds from late march till September. On 25th. September two teams will play the grand final at the MCG. When the country will virtually stop in at least 3 states. People are judged and measured by which footy team they support. The objective of the game like other types of football is to get the ball to the goals at the correct ernd. The ball and the ground are oval in shape. There are forwards, defenders, ruckmen and mid fielders. There are 18 men on the field for each team at any one time and 4 on the bench (interchange). To begin the game the ball is bounced in the centre. (Very high) The tallest men the ruckmen have to tap the ball down where the smaller men attempt to grab the ball then either kick it, hand *** it or run with it bouncing it as they go. The men wear only shorts and guerseys. No padding. Speed is very important with many top mid fielders running 30 -40 kilomertres. Many can sprint 100 m in less than 10 seconds and are elite athletes. The ball can be kicked 60 m +++ The idea is to mark the ball with skill then keep the ball moving forward. A clean mark by a forward often results in a goal. There is a 50 metre line at each end and forwards try and mark inside this line. There are 4 goal posts. Kicking between the inner two is a goal worth 6 points. The outer two are point posts. If a goal is kicked the ball is bounced up again. if a point is kicked the opposition get to kick out. Hip and shouldering, tackling andbumping are allowed in the game. High marking on another man's shoulders is also allowed and the men get very high up. At the elite level it is a fast moving, fierce, skillful and exciting game which cannot be matched. A score for a decent game in good weather might be 20-30 goals. There are 4 30 minute quarters with 10 minute then 20 minute at half time then another 10 minute break during the game. Crowds are large ranging from 30000 to 110000 at finals games. In finals 8 teams qualify. There are 2 elimination finals rounds then 4 teams remaining play off in 2 preliminary finals to determine the grand finalists. When our team won 200000 people came out for a street parade. It is a big deal. this is in a city of 1 million. Australian rules is virtually a major aspect of Australian culture especially in southern states. During winter footy fanaticism can reach fever pitch. THANK GOD IT STARTS NEXT WEEK. my gear is ready and i cannot wait.
