Australian Rules Football. BrianDoogan and Xraydelta gave you the best explanation of the game. I'm from Denver and worked for Fox Sports in Sydney for 5 years commenting on Gridiron (American football) Aussies like to comment a lot on how the "only/main" differences are padding, helmets and a faster game, but just because there is a goal and an oblong shaped ball DOES NOT mean they're even that similar of a sport sport. Rugby league and Rugby Union fans have the same argument, but League and AFL are completely different as well. Some of the best athletes I've ever seen were AFL players. Gridiron is much more strategy. Like comparing chess and checkers. It is also interesting to see the difference in following of a sport based on what state you're from. People in the North don't follow AFL much at all, where as in Victoria (south) you will have 10 year old little girls talk your ear off about it. Also with Rugby Union and League it seems that it's a "class" debate..."lower class like League and upper class like Union (rugby)." It was explained to me that way so many times...very sad!!! Go Swannies!!!!

This web site will give you the run down on the Australian Football League formally the Victorian Football League. You see, it depends on which state you live in, to what code of football is played. In Victoria,South Australia,Western Australia, and Tasmania, it's all AFL, with Rugby League being the main footy game in New South Wales and Queensland, although both Sydney and Brisbane have an AFL team and Melbourne has a Rugby League team, confused? Well its healthy for sport to have such a diversity of codes at National and International levels. Hopefully, we may win the World Cup of Soccer, so the world can take notice of another International Team... GO YOU SOCCEROOS!!!

ok... i have heard of this, but whenever I hear the term "AFL" it makes me think of the American sport "Arena Football League"... this is just confusing me a lot, but I get some worldwide sports channels on my tv in the USA, and I watch Australian football a lot... I don't really care who wins, though

it isnt american footbal or soccer, its totally different. AFL (australian football league) is pretty unique to australia because they are the only ones that play it at that level though in Ireland they have gaelic which is probably the closest thing to AFL. So yeah, just like American football have gridiron as their unique football code, Australia has AFL.

We classify football into three categories: 1) Rugby 2) Rugby League 3) AFL Now rugby league is a spin off game from rugby and both games are a lot tougher than that of the Americans. We Play longer harder and have no belief in wearing any of that padding after all Football is a mans sport! AFL is a faster paced game and relies a lot on kicking. We are very passionate about our footy especially if we are versing another state such as Queensland or Victoria ( By the way last year New South Wales held the AFL cup and The Origin Cup) BRING IT ON QLD!!! Game 3 we'll crucify you!!

Australian football is a unique game, the closest possible comparison is gaelic football. It's played on an oval field with goal posts at each end, either side of the posts are two more, or behind posts. A goal is worth six points. If a shot goes between a goal post and a behind post you get a point. It's one of the few games in the world where you get a point for missing a goal! Too much to explain here, check below.

it's cool not many people from other counties know about it- but it's like a major sport in australia and almost everyone is into it, there are some states that are more football crazy than others, especially iof there team is doing well on the ladder. it is similar to american football but they don't wear protection like football guys in america do.

Aussie football was a game invented to keep cricket players fit during the off season....its quite a rough game played with an oval ball similar to an American football....theres no padding and one of the rules is where your allowed to plant your foot into another persons lower back and basically run up his back to gain extra height for catching the ball...its completely different to rugby and American football in the way its played, the only other sport that come close to its rules would be GAA (gaelic/Irish football)
