What are the people like in Forte dei Marmi, Italy?

  • I am staying there for the summer and would like to know what I'm walking into.

  • Answer:

I know Forte dei Marmi a little as I lived for several summers and falls in Pietrasanta, which is the next door neighbor to the south. The whole area is very interesting with more artists per capita than most places on earth.  While the tourist flock to the beach, which is tremendous, the artists stay a bit inland and work at marble-carving in Pietrasanta. The people are trendy, typical Tuscan Italians who enjoy good food and great wine.  They are fairly aggressive, especially behind the wheel, and not always too open to foreigners that they deem to be tourists but quite friendly when they realize you are not a tourist. I enjoyed the area enough that I had three long stays in the area and have returned every now and then.   Small town Italy has its charms -- watch Fellini's great movie, Amarcord, to get a feel for town life in a coastal town.

Forte dei Marmi is like St Tropez was back in the 1950s or early 1960s. The dominant tone is set by upper class Italian young people. In St Tropez you are going to have some European King or American movie star or wall of $10 million yachts that is going to make the French young people look small. It is the same crowd every year and the number of accomodations is relatively small. It is not a welcoming place for tourists or day-trippers.
