Answer:
Generally yes. It tends to be a form of price discrimination employed by car makers to get people to pay the highest price possible for a car. Sometimes options are necessary, but think very carefully if you need them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_discrimination

The price is whatever the seller thinks they can sell it for has nothing to do with the implementation cost. If you bought the add on you obviously weren't over charged as you decided it was worth the cost by buying it.

The most expensive parts of the vehicle are the engine, transmission, frame and that's mostly it. All the other add ons are pennies on the dollar when you look at it from a mass production scale. That's why most automakers put the least expensive model with just barely enough features to past muster, in order to advertise that "starting at $19,999" tag. Options are where the profits are, leather, heated seats, moonroof, those would only cost a few hundred bucks for at factory cost, but at retail that's a few thousand. And same thing with electronics, navi, integrated wifi, backup cameras, etc. So if you're getting the fully loaded model, it's going to be the one the automaker makes the most on. And that's ok, as only at the factory level can they add the equipment at that cost. If you were to take the basement model and asked a shop to turn it into the loaded model, it would cost much, much more than that price gap and you would still be missing certain things, like better engine/transmission, sound deadening, active safety features, etc on higher models.
