Working as a store associate?

What are your experiences working in a pet store or feed store?

  • I'd really like to work in a new feed store (sells farm supplies, pet food, pet bedding, etc. Basically a pet store without animals) in my town. I'm the min. working age, and ...show more

  • Answer:

All through out college and high school I worked at a farm/feed store. I thought I would LOVE the job because I lived on a farm and was knowledgeable about farm animals, but it's not all fun and games. Horse people are notoriously know-it-all, and I've found they tend to live up to their name pretty well. Older farmers don't always like to see a girl working in a farm store. The cashiering part is super easy, but the labor can be demanding. At the farm store I worked at, I was responsible for hauling out bags and bags of feed, barn lime, salt blocks, or whatever that person needed. On super busy days it was nonstop hauling bags out to trucks, which brings up another interesting point. Just carrying it into the truck isn't enough. You need to be able to swing the bag into the bed of the truck, often stacking feed bags. I am strong, but it's not always an easy task when you are short and trying to stack bags above your head. Plus, these types of stores often carry more than just feed. We carried chemicals as well, and you bet people are going to come to you for answers! Most people who own animals know how to care for their animals, they won't be asking you questions about that. They will want to know how much herbicide to put on their lawn, the concentrate ratio, what the active ingredients are, what chemical kills which weed, which chemical is safe for pastures, etc. I knew animals, but I sure as hell didn't know chemicals or fertilizers! Of course though as the worker you are expected to know. So, what I am trying to say is, working in a farm store is really not animal based. People who own animals know about their animals. They don't need you to tell them how to raise their animals. It wasn't AWFUL, I worked their for four years, but it wasn't like I was expecting.

I think it would be a great fit for you, especially since you are homeschooled and can make yourself available during times when other teens are in school. Mainly the job is helping customers, ringing up orders - and LOT of lugging heavy sacks around! Bonus - most feed stores I've been in have a few cats or dogs hanging around.

The more "everything" you know, the better. My cousin runs a feed store and he sells puppies, kittens and birds, too. It's a wonderful place, always clean and inviting. Folks who aren't planning to buy anything stop in just to visit. (They usually buy something regardless.) I do not know how he manages to SELL kittens, when so many people give away free ones, but the store is so super-nice that the kittens just have to be nice, too. The key to thinking about a place like that is, "Why would someone want to come in here, rather than to go somewhere else?" If you can help the store's owner answer that question, you'll be a valuable employee. If on the other hand you mostly think, "Geeez, I can't wait to get out of here and go home," then there is something fundamentally wrong, either with your situation or with the store. As for lifting stuff, my cousin's daughter is a short girl but seems to be super strong. She will lift anything, and gets a bit resentful when someone tries to tell her she's not strong enough to heft a 100-pound feed sack that nearly outweighs her. If you're not strong now, you will be!

If you love talking to people about their pets and helping them find whatever it is they're looking for, than you'll love working at a pet or feed store. After all, they're in there buying stuff for their four legged friends so most are in a good mood.

I'm starting to work at my old lessons stable this Saturday.. Can't wait. (: I will get free board and a free lesson a week with a horse I purchase, it will be a great experience. I may even get a Real job at my dogs groomers place, they groom dogs and have a dog shelter in the back... so that would be a nice experience, I'm wanting to be a horse trainer eventually.. Maybe even barn manager and Lessons instructor.. Anything in that category.
