I really like my new job except for the long working hours (there are days where I work 12 hours), will I get used to these long hours?
-
The job is great for my career. I do get home kind of late which messes with my lifestyle of working out and spending time with my girlfriend. I also need to travel which takes 2 hours a day

Answer:
As already mentioned in working 60 hour weeks isn't supposed to be healthy, on the other hand if you owned a small business, or were trying to set up your medical practice like I did when I started out at 30 yo, these hours are quite common, with being called out to the hospital etc. I worked 90 to 100 hour weeks for around two years untill I got my practice up to the level I felt it should be. So maybe you hang around the office after normal working hours because there always will be something to do but which can wait till the next working day, maybe because you like it so much; if so, don't do that. In some companies the bosses expect the staff to later than earlier, not good either. If these long hours are just for a foreseeable period e.g. to get to know the business, or set the business up as you feel it should be, discuss this with your significant other, I hope she will agree. That makes the time you have together more quality time, easier to get when living together, more problematic when not living together, otherwise she might feel neglected and be unhappy with you. Depending on your circumstances you might look around for other more suitable jobs. I wish you well!

If you have to spend up to 14 hours in addition to getting ready before travelling, you will burn out quite quickly, to the detriment of your career. No amount of 'loving your job' will compensate in any way shape or form for this outcome. It is likely that your volunteerism at work, namely in the form of longer than reasonable hours, has set a precedent and consequently an expectation that you need this many hours in a day to complete the tasks delegated to or adopted by you. There is no better time than the present to: 1. quit for the sake of your health 2. start rolling back your volunteerism immediately to a strict 45 hour maximum working week 3. negotiate that you telecommute one day per week to compensate for travel time and excessive hours in the office I am assuming you are referring to one hour each way to and from work which is normal in any metropolis. The second assumption is that the 12 hour working day happens at least once per week, and that you never work less than nine hours per day in the office. You have over-committed yourself, but equally so has your employer. It's up to you to correct this scenario so that you may experience longevity and good health in this position. There is nothing more dangerous than a sedentary lifestyle, at the desk of any office. You might as well smoke two packs of cigarettes per day because that's roughly the amount of damage you are doing to yourself.
