How can I convince my mom to let me lease a horse?

  • Okay, I am pretty much obsessed with horses. I am 13, and I've been riding since age 9. I can jump, walk, trot, canter, and have done those three gaits bareback (cantering is the ...show more

  • Answer:

First off, you DON'T convince instructor to let you jump higher. When THEY, who know what they are doing, allow you to jump higher, they will. Unless, they are one of those barns that don't allow their students to jump. Are they allowing other students to jump higher? If so, then it is you and you need to be patient and do well at the height you are at. It could also be the horses. They need to be school masters and many riding schools just don't own fancy enough horses. As for convincing to half lease, first talk to your instructor and find out if she even thinks you are ready. If she says you are, then find out prices, whether or not you would need to buy tack, a horse you would be interested in. If you go to them rationally, they will be more likely to say yes.

Jumping is quite dangerous, and to go higher, the horse must be trained for it and suitable for it. Usually lesson horses only go so high, so if you want to go higher, it's not the instructor, it's barn of horses to choose from and you'd have to go to a higher level of lesson on better horses. Express the desire to go higher, and see what your instructor says. Also know that there's a bigger chance of refusals from the horse at higher stages, and that the horse you are riding has to be atleast one level "better" than you for you to really be able to learn. Some horses won't jump and will refuse if you didn't count strides right, if you don't have a perfect seat, any number of things. You have to mentally understand everything about jumping, and be able to put it into action. Have you ever sat a buck or cow kick? Does your instructor constantly get after you about heels down or steady hands? If you're still being corrected at your current levcel, you're not quite ready to move on yet. As far as convincing your mom about a lease, you need to know how much it costs, and if your mom can afford it. Usually that's the main factor, money. You need to show why you "need" a horse, how you will work off the cost of it to make it worth while for your mom. If the horse you want to lease is not the one you are currently riding, be prepared for the fact that every horse rides different, and you may or may not have the same sort of relationship with the leased horse.

1) to jump higher- you just have to show your instructor that you can do the low jumps really well and then they will put them up. If that doesn't work nicely ask if you can maybe try raising the jumps for this lesson or something like that. 2) Try to show your parents your responsible and maybe try to help out and make some money if you can. I lease a horse and I have to help with certain house work to "repay my debt" Just tell them that it would help your riding.

Try sending your parents an email asking and going on and on about how much you love horses. It's funny cause I am in the EXACT same position... if I come up with a sulotion, I'll contact you.
