What's your worst/best memory of high school and why?

Answer:
There was a time in my life when I was actually decent on the violin and enjoyed it very much. But when it came to performing in front of other people, I always became nervous and got frustrated frequently with my inability to play as well as I could practice alone. I was still driven to break out of this mold of playing just for myself. So naturally, I first joined my high school orchestra during sophomore year back in 2006. One of the first announcements that was made by my conductor during the first class was that our orchestra was given the chance to go and perform at a music festival in San Antonio. Needless to say, everyone was super pumped for the trip. A few weeks before the actual trip, one of my friends that I had met at All-State Orchestra sent me a link of Joshua Bell performing at a subway station in D.C. - except as a street performer with a baseball cap partially hiding his face. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/04/AR2007040401721.html One of the pieces that he played for the oblivious passerby was the Bach - Chaconne, which inspired me to start practicing it like crazy. The double-stops, triple-stops, and the length (~15 minutes!) exhausted me to the point where I almost considered just giving up on it. But it was a worthy challenge and I thought I had what it took to make the piece my own. Fast forward several weeks later and our orchestra group is staying at this nice hotel in San Antonio. As we were hanging out next to a pool, a friend of mine, who was briefly talking about the Joshua Bell article earlier, suggested that I play for the restaurant customers on the other side of the hotel courtyard and see how much money I could bag. At first I was adamant (as I always was) since it would mean not only playing for the restaurant, but also for the entire hotel. I didn't want to face the risk of messing up and having to deal with embarrassment in front of so many people. And yet, it was an intriguing challenge because I was curious if I could match the amount that Joshua Bell earned when he played at the subway: $32.17 . Maybe I could do better? That was my question. I placed my violin case on the steps, walked on the stone platform with my violin and began playing the Chaconne - the same piece that Joshua Bell started with. During the performance I knew I was making mistakes - missed a note, harmony was a bit off, slurs were a bit choppy. At the same time, I started to not mind them as much as before and played like crazy! As crazy as I could possibly play! I was really exhausted after playing the Chaconne, but I got a huge applause from everyone in the courtyard. They asked for an encore. The only thing I was fully prepared to deliver was Scene de Ballet by Beriot so I went ahead and played it to the best of my ability. After another applause, I went down the steps and found money inside my case. I went up to my hotel room and counted the money: $45! In just 25 minutes! After six years have passed, I'm not so decent anymore. But that event in my life during high school gave me more encouragement to try new things later on, even if I might screw up big time. Despite spending time on other passions these days, I try picking up my violin time to time. My moment in San Antonio still resonates with me and it will do so as long as I live. Courage takes you really far, it turns out.

Our senior class took a class trip to Washington, D.C. In order to save money with cheaper hotel rates we went in January. We walked a great deal of the time in museums and from place to place and it was quite cold that week. One afternoon we visited the Supreme Court. It was extremely hot in the visitors section, and I was exhausted and it was right after lunch, and I fell asleep and a security officer wakened me and told me to "Show some respect to the court". I was thoroughly embarrassed. When we got back to school, the class was to present an assembly program about our trip, but I hid under my bed and didn't show up. After I was married and had to go to wedding showers a game that was often played was to tell our most embarrassing moment in life. I always thought my story would be entertaining, but every time I had an opportunity, it was blocked in my memory. I just knew something very embarrassing had happened to me as a teen-ager, but I couldn't recall what it was.

Worst memory: A teacher of mine crying in the class after our principal had humiliated her. Best memory: Many actually; mostly involving English teachers commending me on my work/answers. But the most favorite one belongs to a day in third standard. It was a Science viva, now I was a good kid, I mean used to give all the answers but that day I had not studied. So the teacher questions me, I can't answer so she slaps me. I start crying. Then she holds me and she says: "You'll be the first one I will question tomorrow" I look up, and with all the courage I can manage, I say, "And I'll answer ma'm!" The next day she questions me again, a single question; I answer that, then she asks me to question the rest of the class (which used to be like a really great feeling in those days! :D)

Parent Teacher's Meeting. Class XII. Maths Teacher: He comes late to the school everyday. My Dad: Atleast he comes. I have to put in a lot of effort to wake him up every morning. Class XII. A teacher who didn't really liked me: I have a lot of complaints regarding him though he is good in studies he... My Dad: I don't have time for it; I have a meeting. Tell me where to put my signature. (Nightmares for others, PTMs were fun for me. I wish everyone had a cool father like mine) Class XII My Physics Teacher (to the brother of a junior student): There is this one student Prateek Kedia, you won't believe him. He thinks he can crack IITJEE just like your sister thinks she can make it into medicals. (he went on degrading my name infront of the guy) Me: Morning Sir! The Physics Teacher: He's Prateek I was just telling you about. The other guy: I know. He's my best friend and like a brother to me. Me: (smiling as he'd already texted me what that teacher was saying about me) Class X. Computer Teacher: Prateek, you don't look that fat when from behind. Me: And you don't look that bald, sir! (This was when I was going home on my cycle and he was on his bike, we both laughed afterwards) Class XII Coordinator, an administrative staff: Will you pay the library overdue of 340 rupees or not? Me: I won't. Coordinator: Ok! (And voila! I paid no fine) Class XI. My Class Teacher: Prateek, you know yesterday vice-principal sir saw a student throwing chalks in the classroom? Me: Yes! It was me. He saw me doing that. Didn't he tell you? The look on his face....priceless...he never expect I'd admit to it. As usual I was given no punishment. Class XI. This is one of the best memories. We had no class for the entire day as most of the teachers were absent so we decided to ask the principal for an early leave. Principal: What do you think it is Prateek? A college? No, its a school now go back to your class. (I wonder why I was always asked to go talk to teachers in matters like these) Me: She said no! Others: Damn it. Now what? Me: I'm going, anyone wanna join me? Others: You're mad or what? You'll never make it past the security check point. We'll go talk to her again. Me: Suit yourselves. They were all scolded and while returning they saw me leaving with my cycle. Since that was the time when the buses entered the plaza, I was able to sneak out without getting caught by the security. While was going, I waved my classmates goodbye. Their expressions of disgust and amazement as the same time made me feel even better. Class X. I took a medical leave and went home. (Ofcourse I wasn't ill) Staff: Make a call to us when you reach home. Me: Sure. I completely forgot about the call I was supposed to make after I reached home. Phone rings and my mother answers it. Staff: I'm calling from the school, is Prateek there? Mother: What has he done now? I was sitting there and laughed so hard, I'm sure the staff would have got her answer.

The football team. We lost every game by large amounts for 3 years in a row. I was injured badly in the last game of my senior year. The team folded the next year.

Please spare my english, i am new here. This happened in 10th Grade with one of my best friends...So this guy (let's call him XYZ) isn't very good at studies. The subject is Hindi language and most of class thinks of hindi as a boring subject, me too.We had to complete our copies(write Q&A's and exercises from course book into notebook) and get them corrected from Mam.We submitted our copies to the teacher. Now mam tells the students to recite the new chapter, one para each, while she was checking our copies in the class. Now arrives my Best Friend's Notebook. She started marking ticks on pages (and reading randomly between lines so as to see what students have actually written)Suddenly she calls out his nameMam: XYZ ??(he stands up)Mam: Do you use Guide ??(A guide is like a cheatbook for a main course book containing a summary in easy language and answers to exercises of all chapters ; teachers hate guide)XYZ: (In trembling voice) No mam ..Mam: The Question is "some random question i don't remember". What have you written for answer here?XYZ: *poker face*Then she told us the answer he had written. The whole class burst into Laughter, XYZ and teacher too.His answer was: " Is prashnya ka uttar vidhyaarthi swayam deven" Translation: " Students must write this answer themselves"He was so deep and Negligent in copying answers from guide that he just ctrl-c & ctrl-v -ed everything word to word. PS: In another incident, same guy once made an excuse for not submitting his notebook on time. His excuse was : gaay kha gayi..(a cow ate my copy)Awkward thing was Teacher actually didn't say anything to him.Maybe she bought it, or maybe she grew tired of his pity excuses. We can never know!

I love music. At my high school, the music department has a honours programme. The way honours classes work at my school is that if you take them, your grade is weighed on a 5.0 GPA scale, while college prep classes are on a 4.0 GPA scale. This system allows the ambitious kids to move up in their class ranking. Anyway, you typically had to be a junior or senior to take honours music. The music department decided to make an exception for me and a few other kids so that we could take it as sophomores. Part of the grades for honours music is the torture experience they call the "Honours Recital" which happens at the end of every semester. Basically, you have to play a solo, which is counted as a test grade. The first solo I played went fairly well, as I was able to do it without an accompanist. The second one, however, I was required to play with the piano. This is where things got bad. I had only had one rehearsal with the pianist, and I was VERY nervous when I went up to play. The only time I play solos with an even tempo is when I'm very calm and composed, which I wasn't at that point in time. I was completely off with the piano. My solo, by it's self, would have been fine, but because my tempo was so wonky, I only got like an 80 because it sounded absolutely abysmal. Defiantly my worst experience so far. (I still have two years to go.)
