What are the categories of Data Scientist if I am trying to build a Data Science team?
-
I have seen the Venn Diagram related to Data Scientist skills and my take is that the diagram seems to be asking for too much from one person in today's landscape. We will see these kind of people in 5-10 yrs. But , today , If I want to build a data science team - I am looking at three kinds of resources. Please help me out to validate my viewpoint below. The way I am looking at Data Scientists is : Category 1 : Traditional Analysts - These are your traditional analytics people who can do basic statistics (Linear Regression , clustering and classification) . These are your typical MBA skills OR undergrad stat skills. Knowledge of tools like IBM SPSS , Tableau(data visualization) etc. There focus is to develop an intuition around datasets , rather than build models. They will typically come with a good domain expertise. Category 2: Programmers - This category to me is people who know some programming language and some off-the shelf tool for Machine Learning / Predictive Analytic i.e Java Programmers who know Mahout , Python programmers who know Google Predict , Prior Knowledge etc. i.e you do not need to be a phd Math , but , have a good understanding of the techniques and tools available in the marketplace Category 3: Advanced Quants : These are people who can actually write new machine learning code and apply their math/cs background to new problems . So the difference between Category 2 and 3 is that if you need a generic recommendation engine - The programmers will be able to stitch together something up with Mahout or Google Predict , but , if you have a new problem around claims fraud where an off the shelf product is not available then you will call in Advanced quants. Does this way of thinking make sense from the perspective of a traditional Enterprise and not a silicon valley startup.

Answer:
I made this infographic a while back because I receive a lot of emails from HR recruiters and gaming studio managers asking about job titles and requirements in the field of analytics, and I got tired of copying and pasting the same response (now I just link to this infographic on my blog). The roles I identify are functionally similar to what you describe, but I think the job titles I use better reflect industry standards.

Your categories are reasonable groupings of skills, though real-life candidates are usually some mix of categories and it can be hard to sort out who can do what. I hope you are building a data science team to solve some specific problems and not just because everyone has one. If so, I'd recommend detailed job descriptions that describe the skills required for your particular projects. If you put out a blanket call for data scientists, everyone in the world will apply.
