Not really, but their history after 1787 is fading and confused. Adam Weishaupt founded them in 1776, and they were a muddle of heresy, anarchy, and Freemasonry. The Pope pretty much declared them ridiculous in 1785, the Bavarian government condemned them in 1787. After this, Weishoupt admitted his errors, and reconciled with the Catholic Church. But the movement remained not without influence and connected to Freemasonry, and its members took credits for the French Revolution which later proved untenable. Historically, they faded away. Conspiratorially, there has been free reign. Well, hey, what a presumptuously wonderful name! As for the The DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons, there are many obvious errors appearing as facts. Secondly, for what it's worth to you, a priest, Father Bernard O'Connor, was on the set of the latter in civilian clothes, and he states that in at least two cases, crew members would tell him, in effect, "we stand united with Dan (Brown) to destroy the Catholic Church".
