How do you set up Gmail chat?

How can I stop all Google Chats going into my Gmail inbox?

  • I use OSX Messages for Google Chat. Every message I send or receive goes straight to my inbox, which makes for a lot of clutter. How do I stop this and just get messages sent while I was offline in my inbox? My setup: To stop the weird issue of chats not syncing properly between Messages & the web Gmail interface I have 'Chat' turned off. This still allows you to access GChat via Jabber, just stops some chats from popping up in the web Gmail interface. I *do* want my chat history to be saved & indexed (just not go straight to my inbox), so I've set 'My chat history' to save. I have two Gmail accounts and use both in Messages. Account B is set to forward all mail to Account A (and I only log into Account A day-to-day). Any ideas? Driving me crazy.

Create a Gmail filter in the account you use for chatting with email subject containing the phrase Chat with. It will filter all such emails with the subject line as Chat with & you chose them to Skip the Inbox (Archive them) and/or Mark them as read and/or can also apply a Label.
