How to plan an open house?

Energy saving question- if I have an open plan house how can I reduce the heat going upstairs ?

    Hi, if you watch the steam coming out of your dishwasher when you open it up, you will see the picture of what happens to the heating in your house. I believe you need to completely curtain off the stairs.

[ you could partially block the stairs it would help, thought of doing that in mine.. but i bought a small 12 volt dehumidifier and put it at the top of the stairs, i bought it from homebase and it blows the dry air straight up and into the stairwell and recirculates and directs the warm air downstairs it's been great....<^><....

Is there a convenient location in the stairway or landing where you could hang a curtain you could draw closed as required to separate the upstairs from the downstairs. I doubt the fan would be effective and if energy saving is the plan maybe even counter productive.
