What is a "case study" format?

Solar Energy Case Study?

  • I need help on where to start with my Solar Energy Case Study, I don't understand the format of it and some of the things we have to include. Please help the question is: Does ...show more

  • Answer:

I suggest starting by defining the scope of your case study. The smaller you make your case, the easier it will be to be thorough. Taking the whole world as the scope makes it hard. Try to limit it to one country, or better, one small area, or one specific home, or one application. Either solar or fossil can win, depending on which is more accessible in a given location. Also decide what constitutes "better." Is it strictly the immediate cost to produce electricity? Are lifecycle costs and environmental impact to be considered?

Well, start by looking into what it takes to store the electricity from solar panels. What does it take to make solar panels(fossil fuels usually), what does it take to make batteries to store the energy. How much waste will this all cause? What is the efficiency of it compared to fossil fuels. Currently the United States is sitting on some of the most oil in the world, but we don't tap it for some reason...EPA maybe? I don't know. Solar energy for simple things like toys etc is definitely a better route than fossil fuels, but when it comes down to industrial applications, solar cannot compete. Look into how many square yards/miles or w/e to produce the same amount of energy as a coal fired power plant. Take into consideration of how much fossil fuels would be used to create the solar cells and as far as energy, i really only know of two types - kinetic and potential...unless like you said wind, e.m., geothermal, etc.(i'd check the net to make sure you get the types of energy correct). Supposedly the sun only creates a certain amount of energy in a square yard, so our technology can only go so far with solar from what I understand. I've done quite a bit of solar work, so I know a bit about it. I've made a solar cell my self, although archaic it worked. I've also made a solar panel, but my dad broke it by accident and I haven't gone back to my hobby yet because it can get VERY expensive. Yeah, that's another thing to look into. Hope that helps.
