How is the greenhouse effect beneficial to todays society?
-
and why are scientists concerned that more greenhouse gases trapped in the atmosphere will result in global warming?
-
Answer:
There is always "greenhouse effect". The Earth would be 30 C colder on average (like the Moon) if there were no greenhouse effect. That would result in a mostly frozen planet. The problem is, that the maximum greenhouse effect, if infrared wavelengths became completely opaque, is about 30 C warmer than present, which would be a very different planet --- almost no ice at all, even in Antarctica, and lakes on the equator near boiling. Humans are increasing the amount of greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels. As a result, the temperature is likely to increase slowly for the next 300 to 600 years. How much it increases depends on a variety of feedback effects that are very hard to predict, but the worst-case scenario is very bad indeed. Gigadeaths of humans and mass extinctions of many species. For the next few decades, the result may be beneficial since a small amount of warming will be beneficial, although the strengths of storms may increase.

The greenhouse effect traps heat in the Earth's atmosphere rather than it being released into space. It is beneficial because we would otherwise be living on a much colder planet. Our agriculture would be limited to lattitudes near the equator which would mean that we would not be able to feed as many people. Scientists are concerned about greenhouse gases and global warming because increases in average global temperatures can cause negative effects on our environment. As an example, higher temperatures are causing glaciers around the globe to receed and melt quicker. Glacial water is a large supplier of fresh water in the world.

Try living without it. The Moon is a nice place to try that.

Lighter colored thing (albedo) on earth (snow) reflect a lot of the suns warmth. If the polar ice caps continue to melt earths albedo will be lower causing the earth to heat up. Water vapor of one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gasses. Less snow = higher earth temp = more evaporated water = rising earth temperatures.

It isn't. It poisons the atmosphere and slowly decays our health.
