What are your thoughts on the Arctic sea ice "recovery?

Does this look like a massive sea ice extent recovery?

  • http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_images/N_timeseries.png bear in mind that the '06/'07 year was the lowest extent since satellite records began, and the ...show more

  • Answer:

The evidence shows that there is 1,000,000 square km less ice than average which means that the arctic is warmer than average. The difference between the average and this years ice is much larger than the noise meaning that the result is statistically significant. There is approximately 375,000 square km more ice in January, 2010 compared with January, 2007. The average ice thickness is needed for a complete picture of the situation.

Nope, it looks about the same to me with the differences mostly due to noise and natural variations.

Not a recovery no. But: Errr . . . there's less ice because of higher temperatures caused by the Arctic Oscillation, as the website you linked to makes clear: ""Over most of the past century, the Arctic Oscillation alternated between its positive and negative phases. Starting in the 1970s, however, the oscillation has tended to stay in the positive phase, causing lower than normal arctic air pressure and higher than normal temperatures in much of the United States and northern Eurasia."" http://nsidc.org/arcticmet/patterns/arctic_oscillation.html The University of Illinois Cryosphere project puts the lowered extent of Arctic ice during this oscillation at 0.764 - hardly a cause for concern. http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/IMAGES/seaice.recent.arctic.png .

Who cares about sea ice? I mean really? Does it benefit humanity? Does thick ice benefit life in any way? I thought not. Places where there is more life depending on warmth are cold. This is a problem. Well I suppose if you're a fan of ice-worms... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_worm

"According to the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado, Arctic summer sea ice has increased by 409,000 square miles, or 26 per cent, since 2007." http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1242011/DAVID-ROSE-The-mini-ice-age-starts-here.html "Surprisingly the maximum ice growth rates occur in 2007 and 2008, I don’t remember those headlines for some reason." http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/02/03/arctic-sea-ice-increases-at-record-rate/ "During December 2009, ice extent grew at an average of 68,000 square kilometers (26,000 square miles) per day. Sea ice extent increased at a fairly steady rate throughout the month, staying slightly above the levels observed in December 2007." http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/ Quite frankly, it looks like Arctic is is well below where it once was, reaching a low in 2007 but recovering nicely since then. Of course that is a short period of recovery time which may or may not signal any sort of trend.

Satellite records began in 1979, following a 35-year cool-off that had led major media outlets like Newsweek, as well as the environmental activists who launched Earth Day, to voice concern about a 'coming ice age.' You can't just assume that the way things were when you developed the capacity to take regular readings is the way things had always been. You seem to be doing that.

its like watching a pot boiling you need to wait and see over a longer period of time.

Do some real research for a change and discover the truth like moderates do instead of taking the party line from your sell leader and closing eyes and ears to the world. Pur gakkel ridge volcanoes into the Google search bar and read a few articles on the massive string of volcano's heating the artic ocean enough to slow down ice formation a little. But then liberals have always preferred their religious propaganda instead of real science and this is why they use the churches peer review system instead of the true scientific method developed by scientists following the churches suppression of science during the late middle ages. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_Galilei http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peer_review http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method http://www.examiner.com/x-4648-Atlanta-Weather-Examiner~y2009m6d21-Sun-spot-cycle-impacting-global-warming-and-cooling http://docinthemachine.com/2007/02/15/flawedpeers/ http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/ice_ages.html http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message307338/pg1 http://m.climaterealists.com/index.php?id=2516 http://minnesotansforglobalwarming.com/m4gw/2009/01/earth-on-the-brink-of-an-ice-age.html http://swampie.wordpress.com/2009/01/11/what-the-vostok-ice-core-data-says-about-global-warming-and-more-importantly-cooling/

From the graph you provided it appears that the area of the ocean with at least 15% sea ice has increased 1.5%. It should be noted that this happened while the worldwide concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing because....??? the energy output of the Sun is decreasing there may have also been a lessening of hot spring activity ______________________________________...
