Why isnt the grand conyon full of water?

  • i know there used to be a bigger river inside it and there was ALOT of water, but someone told me there's always the same amount of water on earth always has and always will be. ...show more

  • Answer:

The Grand Canyon was never full of water, in the way that you are thinking. The canyon is formed by a small stream of water continuously eroding the rock away beneath it as it tries to find its way to the ocean. The stream/river will never fill the canyon until it reaches the same base level as the ocean and then will only fill up to sea level and not 1 inch more. Since the Colorado Plateau is thousands of feet above sea level, that won't happen any time too soon. There are thousands of more feet of rock left to erode!

ever heard of gravity, water always finds it own level,so the water ran downhill, along long time ago the river used to be at the top of the grand canyon

There's a hole in it at one end.

I agree with Okie Road Hunter.

It came to the UK in the form of rain

It flowed down hill. It basically wore away the ground and dug itself a hole. But I understand there's going to be a panel against erosion held there someday.

It erodes away (erode means to go be absorbed or washed away) so it is absorded in the dry ground to be asorbded and make it wet thats why you see a ton of cracks in the grand conyon water leeks in to rock and eventally wears away so it has a ton of cracks and cliffs

There is a hole at the top, and a hole at the bottom, with a river flowing through, the rock over which the river passes is fairly soft, so over the course of many years it has worn away. So it became a Canyon over the course of time.

holy crack some people have long answers but how bout this eh... lets all pretend threes still water in the grand canyon ok...they'll solve everything

the grand canyon was formed by a massive body of water being released down it, this has happened 100's of times in the earth's history, and usually occurs at the warming of an ice age, the river that you refer to, due to geology, a massive dam made of ice is allowed to form at the mouth of its source, and allows millions of gallons of water to build behind, once the earth warms the water is let go in one mass.
