How Do I Start Composting?

What would be the best way to start a composting system at my school?

  • I don't even know where to start. I'd rather not publicly speak, but if I have to I will...any suggestions?

  • Answer:

First find a teacher/community member (assuming you're at a high school) that is well-versed in the ways of green living, primarily composting. This person will aid as the voice of the movement. Then talk to the school board, the food providers (whichever company is contracted), the custodians (or whoever will be maintaining the pile), environmental science teachers, and other faculty/staff as a professional opinion in a poll. Good luck!

Scott is right about getting cooperation but his dimensions are too large. The ideal compost pile or bin is 4'x4'x4', give or take a foot in any dimension. Too small and the compost will not heat up (It should get hot enough to scald bare flesh.); too large and air will not get in to the center, leaving you with a smelly mess, unless you keep turning the pile by hand. With luck, you can get a balance of grass clippings and leaves. Other things can be added, if you know what you are doing. If you ask nicely, my township might mail you a copy of "Turn Over an Old Leaf", a booklet that explains everything. Email me if you want the address.

talk to your teachers, SRC, or at the P&C meeting about how compost helps the environment, and how the kids will learn to be good to the environment. do some research on the benefits on composting. Here's how to make a compost pit: First build a 2 metre by 2 metre box that's about 1 metre deep. If your school has lawns that are mowed put all the grass clippings in. also put a bin with all the other school bins that kids can put their food scraps in (no meat though, it attracts rats). every month give it a spray with the hose. when its full Leave it until its all black and mooshy. then shovel it out and churn it into the garden! :)
