What are some endangered species in the chapparal?

What could you do to help save an endangered species or set of species in a given habitat?

  • What could you do to help save an endangered species or set of species in a given habitat like our local sage scrub in Southern California, in a coral reef, a tropical rainforest, or ...show more

  • Answer:

Saving the habitat itself would be the biggest help to save the species there since almost every endangered species on the planet today is endangered due to habitat destruction. Secondly, you might want to get rid of invasive plants and animals within these habitats. Cleaning up these areas would benefit the wildlife as well..removing trash and pollutants. Education is great too. Economic support would be through fundraisers and applying for grants.

Support a bounty on the (introduced) cane toad in Australia. I believe humane methods of culling (freezing) were adopted but lack of funding for such culling programs has resulted in the cane toad spreading right across the north of Australia. Kakadu National Park in Northern Territory has also been inundated with these pests. The cane toads have no natural predators in Australia; large snakes or dingoes that may have taken them years ago killed off by their venom or simply poisoned off. Indigenous frogs are battling for survival, as they just cannot compete, many species are already extinct, endangered, some only survive in zoo collections. Many bird species, especially owls and other predatory birds are also endangered not only because of the expansion of farming interests, but affected by rodents being poisoned and their natural foods being reduced in numbers. I did hear that farmers were being encouraged to bring back these owls, etc rather than use poisons, as the owls could actually take more rodents than poisoning could. That is another method you could consider; government support (financial backing) for such methods. Other than some dedicated people arming themselves with bats of an evening are trying to make any impact on growing numbers of cane toads, there is not much being done - Fighting a losing battle.

Depending on what it is.......1. get an education about what is endangered. 2. How to treat the ecosystems, animals, and so on. 3. Go on internet and look up what to do. Any and all answers you need are out here on the internet. The number one place to find funding, just anything! The world becomes our oyster for knowledge right on the web. Ok. Only the web can give you answers to such an open ended questions. Other than that big advice, leave what ever it is alone. If I do not know what it is I leave it, plant, animal or human.

Well for starters education, outreach, advocacy, and fund raising are very important steps. If you create enough noise, people will start to pay attention to you. Worked well for the tea party and occupy coalition, so it is a very effective means of making your voice being heard. Another thing to contend with is taking on major corporations and industries. I know it sounds suicidal, but if you want to protect important natural resources then you will have to run up against these entities at some point. That's just how the world works, it's unfortunate but that's just the way it is.
