What are the traditional and modern methods of "water conservation?

Can anyone tell me about common methods of water conservation in France or any part of Europe?

  Your Question is universal and I dont know what side of the spectrum of my question lies but if you want to keep water longer in creeks and rivers then grow grass long and surrounding area's so that the water can purify naturally,the grass pulls water like a stream and circulates the water flow and spreads it out where area's are thirsty this is called natural science of how Water can be Created and kept longer.Grass keeps the Sun's downward pull that causes stress on the soil and evaporates the water..Grass produces a naturally occuring sunblock to deflect dangerous sun rays..there are lots of miracles grass can do.
