What field of engineering has the most potential to influence the future and the way things are?

I am 12th standard pass out and looking further to go for engineering. I wanted to know what are the things that eletronics and communication engineering deal with? And also would like to know about the scope of the field in the future?

  • Answer:

Electronics & Communication can be broadly segregated to 4 sub-fields: 1. Control System : In a non-technical layman's language, this course deals with what "Gain/Loss" we can get from a particular setup. It deals with different State Machines, how to control them etc. Then we talk about transducers too. Robotics and Automotive Engineering can be considered as sub-sets of this field. Job Prospects In India: Few companies in India in this field are: Honeywell, Rockwell Automation, Bosch, Fanuc, Siemens, GE etc 2. VLSI: It deals with chip designing. All semiconductor devices such as Diodes, Transistors, SOA etc will be taught. Then, Basics of digital electronics i.e. Gate Logic and design. Then finally the process of chip manufacturing and designing. Job Prospects In India: Many companies in India: Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcomm, AMD-ATI, Rambus and plethora of service companies. 3. Communication: It deals with signals and the different ways in which a signal can be "correctly" sent to the receiver's end. The mathematics is killer and you'll enjoy this field if you got a firm hold of mathematics. Job Prospects In India: Not many companies in India deal in communication R&D. Few companies at the top of my head are: Qualcomm, Broadcomm, Analog Devices, Siemens, GE, Harris Stratex, Verizon, AT&T, Erricson etc 4. Electromagnetism: It deals with EM waves and their propagation and all the Maxwell Maths around it. The optical fibre propagation is one interesting topic in it. Then you have Antennae and their wave propagation. Waveguides and their types etc. All the microwave devices (Klystron, Gyrotron, Radars etc). Interesting field, but rarely any jobs in India. Job Prospects in India: Erriscon, DRDO, Huawei etc.
