Can anyone tell me what the holiday Yom Kippur is ?

  • You don't have to give me a long drawn out story just where it comes from and how they celebrate it. Also what religion does it come from?

I don't have much to add . . fasting from sunset to sunset, asking forgiveness . . but I wanted to mention, it's a bit like your confession, but you get to do it every week, we have to save up the whole year . . also, we only confess our sins to God, so there's no middle man to forgive us, it's God or nothing . .

It's the holiest of Jewish holidays. The day of atonement. Basically, you're supposed to ask fogiveness from God and everyone you may have offended in the past year. I think you're not supposed to eat from sunset till the following sunset.

it is the Jewish Day of Atonement- it is celebrated much like a Sabbath with no work but there is also fasting. A great site to answer your questions about this and other Jewish holidays and customs is : http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday4.htm

I think it's the forgiveness holiday. It's 4 Jews. This one girl in my class said all they did was sit and ask 4 forgiveness. I might be getting it mixed up, though.

Yom Kippur is a Jewish holiday. It means "Day of Atonement" and it comes from Leviticus chapter 16. Once a year, the high priest would make atonement for the people at the Holy Temple. Even though the Temple is no longer in existence, Jews still observe this holiday by going to synagogue and fasting from sundown the night before to sundown of that day.

It is the Jewish faith's yearly Day of Atonement, when one contemplates and confesses one's sins, atones for them and prays for God's mercy and forgiveness.

Yom Kippur is a Jewish religious holiday - their holiest day. It's the "Day of Atonement" and involves fast (no food or drink for a day) and prayer. No work either.

It is the holiest day in Judaism, a day to repent for all your sins. You spend the whole day in the Synagogue praying for forgiveness.
