What can cause a swollen or enlarged thyroid?

Can an enlarged thyroid cause occasionally hoarse voice and even voicelessness?

  • I went into the doctor's to be checked out because I had issues with oversleeping, fatigue, and weakness and the doctor found that I had an enlarged thyroid. I have been experiencing slight soreness or a dull pain in my throat and at various times of the day, my voice becomes hoarse and sometimes disappears. This voiceless may last for a few moments or even up to about an hour. I'm going to get a thyroid ultrasound done soon but I would like to know: could my enlarged thyroid be a cause of my hoarse voice and sometimes loss of voice?

  • Answer:

ya obviously , enlarged thyroid may be a goitre can make you speechless or give u a barking sound /hoarse voice .. it can compress your trachea or may lead to tracheomalacia .. or mucosal atrophy so also it may compress your "recurrent layngeal nerve" that will lead to hoarse voice .. its better to consult a doc befoe symptoms are mild. :)
