What exactly is Google Voice?

What are some ways you can use Google Voice for your home telephone number?

  • I am looking for the best / cheap home phone solution and I think Google Voice might be the way to go. My current situation is as follows: Right now I have vonage to power my home telephones and the taxes keep creaping up such that their $24/month plan actually costs $36/month.  (We do make some international calls with Vonage and Google Voice) At the same time, our Republic Wireless hybrid phones, which use WiFi when we're at home work very well.  The only problem with just going with just mobile phones is that they're a little less comfortable, not always charged and we're concerned about radiation. (Maybe we don't need to be when we're on WiFi? Not sure.) So I would like to figure some way to power my home phones with Google Voice.  Any suggestions or alternate ideas would be appreciated.
