What do people cook for thanksgiving dinner?

  • i am Jamaican so I don't really know what people cook on thanksgiving since we don't have thanksgiving there, but I want to have my first thanksgiving dinner and would like some tips ...show more

  • Answer:

Turkey with sage bread stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, candied sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, green salad, yeast rolls, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, apple pie with whipped cream. No wonder Thanksgiving evening is spent in a coma! Mashed potatoes - boil red potatoes, mash with butter, salt, pepper and milk. Sweet potatoes - boil until half done, peel and chop into pieces. Layer with bits of butter and brown sugar. Bake until bubbly and brown. Stuffing - chop onion, celery, parsley and saute in butter. Add a bag of stuffing mix and a loaf of cubed bread. Season with sage, black pepper and poultry seasoning. Add as many as 6 eggs and enough milk to make it very moist. (this is richer than other peoples stuffing. We have Polish roots and they make a rich dressing) Stuff into bird. Put any extra into a buttered casserole. Put it in the fridge until later when there is room in the oven) Green bean casserole - 1 can of mushroom, 1 can of celery soup, 2 cans of milk and about 2 tablespoons of Lipton onion soup mix. Some people put Durkee crunchy onions on top. Bake the casserole until bubbling.

we cook because its a sign of giving thanks and to show what you/we are grateful for and also a time for family to reflect on the past year. to come together and rejoice...... the second part of your question .......... the traditional meal is turkey and the trimmings....... im an old school, soul food cook from the south, i don tsuggest you try that the first time... go some where like boston Market , honeybake ham, or most catering service and order you meal fist....... go od luck!

Beyond what your first person answered, we have green bean casserole and scalloped corn, and a few other kinds of pie like sweet potato pie and cherry and apple. You can sometimes find venison roast being served at our family gathering. every family has it's specialties. I hope you will have a great dinner. You can find all the recipes on the internet by typing in the name of the food and then comma, and recipe. For instance, "scalloped corn, recipe".

Well as for myself I have 3 big meals to prep for; my own at home, my parents home and at work for my residents. So I will be doing the traditional turkey and stuffing, pumpkin and sweet potato pies, warm rolls with gravy and mash potatoes. Pasta salad, veggie trays, macaroni and cheese, honey baked ham, potato salad, I always cook extremely large meals so it will probably be more food added to the menu.
