Printing: Will inkjet printers replace laser printers in business?

I doubt I'd see the day where inkjets will replace lasers. If anything I would think paper would vanish from offices sooner than laser printers. Biggest reason why we go with laser is document longevity. So long as the inks are water-soluble and subject to fading, I would never trust an inkjet with the task of printing out contracts. I'd look pretty silly in a courtroom trying to prove the terms of a contract if I had to ask the judge to imagine what a document looked like as I hand over a piece of paper with only some orange hazed where the words used to be.

Inkjet printers as copiers churn out much cheaper prints compared to anything laser like of that size and capability. If pages per min are the reason to decide on printers, then clearly you are not looking at an offices need for various paper sizes requirement or the fact that Inkjet photo copiers nowdays come without any capital requirement. Merely the promise to print above a certain number of pages per month. I can't say they will rule put laser printers, since it is the choice for desktop printing, but you can't rule the possibility of large Inkjet photo copiers and printers taking on five laser printers at a time and becoming a cost saving infrastructure for 15 people or more in an office. You can't even rule put the possibility of one day tablets taking out paper interactions all together and making printer manufacturers very unhappy or as I would say an opportunity to think about.

Most likely not as they cannot print fast enough. That is the one huge advantage that a laser printer has. I don't think laser printers for businesses are going away anytime soon. Inkjet printers rely soley on the host system they are connected to. Another words, they do not natively speak PCL, Postscript or PDF. A laser printer on the other hand is built for this. If you want to do anything fancy with the output, a printer language such as those listed above are required.  Case in point, the company I work for does a lot of business in the healthcare world. Because of regulations like HIIPA, hospitals are now requiring confidential/print release/pull print software. Another words, personel must be physically in front of the printer to release their print jobs. This is not possible with an inkjet.

The HP PageWide printers are the first inkjet printers that I have seen that could be competitive with laser printers. They are fast (up to 70 ppm), and the cost per page is less than laser. They do this by having a print bar that is the entire width of the page.They also have the same firmware as the HP LaserJet Pro and Enterprise printers, so they have all the LaserJet features.

Both Inkjet and Laser printer are best in the market, but it can be a toss up in this category. It depends upon the requirements, If you are looking for printing and copying in black and white format only, it may be worthwhile to go with a Laser all-in -One printer.
