Why doesn't the cruise ship industry operate huge passenger submarines?

  • A Queen Mary 2 sized submarine with all the usual cruise ship frills would be an awesome experience. Give it the ability to visit a resort in the Mariana Trench and people would line up to spend $100k or more for a week long excursion. This would cost less than a space hotel and could be built in less than a decade. Why isn't the cruise ship industry doing this?

    Well, a submarine like that has no windows. So there's your first problem. Furthermore, there's major liability issues there as well. If a submarine fucks up underwater, the ability to evacuate is greatly reduced. It's just not practical at all.

Have you ever been on a submarine?There are a few issues with this idea… While an enormous submarine probably could be built, it would be far more expensive than a ship with a similar capacity. Going on a cruise on the huge submarine would be prohibitively expensive. Such a large sub couldn't go very deep. Not that there is a reason to go very deep. It's darkness down there. With no windows, you would be confined inside the whole time with no natural light or activities that wouldn't fit inside. Space is at a huge premium in submarines. If you think a regular cruise ship is tight, you haven't seen anything yet. I could see a reasonable case for a submarine cruise marketed towards adventure travellers, but it would probably not be a very large ship, and it wouldn't offer a whole lot in the way of amenities or things to do. Furthermore, as long as you were on the submarine, wherever you were wouldn't matter a bit.
