Are games an appropriate forum for social commentary or criticism?

The article ascribes their lack of comfort to Apple's premise that games "are not the place for social commentary or criticism." Is that premise justified? Are there good examples of games that refute the premise?

I was involved in an experimental design collective led by Rick Valicenti of 3st in Chicago. We explored a lot of story-telling through unusual media, including things like cell phones and games. Having witnessed social commentary via the medium of games done quite successfully, I would say that yes, if it wasn't obvious without actual evidence, games are an appropriate forum for social commentary. What Apple meant to say was, "A lot of people complained." …perhaps followed by, "…and it's not profitable for us to defend a relatively small developer when people complain."
