What is the best way for me to get my Canadian Boating License?

How do I get a boating license in New Jersey?

  • I have a 21 ft motorboat that goes in salt water.  I'm wondering how I can get my boating license to drive the boat.  From the NJ motor vehicle comission's website (http://www.nj.gov/mvc/Licenses/Motorboat.htm), it says that they only offer licenses for fresh water boats.  So I'm confused.  I don't know if I even need a license and if I do, how do I get one?

    You do need one. If you don't get one and get pulled over, you can have your boat impounded, though, I haven't seen this. The boat license you get from NJ DMV is for freshwater only. They will give that to anyone if you ask for it. It requires no testing. However, to boat in Intercoastal waters, you will need to have a NJ Boat Safety Certificate which is given and administered by NJ State Police. You will have to take a class which ranges from 6-8 hours and take a test at the end of the course and pass to get your license. See: http://www.njsp.org/maritime/faq.html

A boating license? No. That's only for inland boats. A boating safety certificate? Yes. You need that and you also need to make sure that you comply with all the other regulations. The boat needs to be registered. Decals need to be applied. Navigation lights need to work. You need fire extinguishers. Life jackets for each person on board. Flares. Air horn. Your toilet ("head") needs to meet requirements. I think you also need to carry your registration papers with you on the boat.
